The Indian firm has reportedly told government officials they and partner Windlab Developments Pty plan to invest $392 million (€290.7 million) in the project.
According to documents filed with the New South Wales planning department, the wind farm will be located near Rugby, Australia, which is about 220 kilometres (135 miles) southwest of Sydney.
The company’s said they hope to begin construction by the mid-2012, and that the wind farm would be operational by 2014.
Australia has become increasingly aggressive in the renewable energy sector in recent years, having established of a target of generating 20 percent of the country’s power from renewable energy by 2020.
To further that goal, Prime Minister Julia Gillard has said lawmakers must decide this year on a way to impose a cost on burning fossil fuels such as coal to tackle climate change.
Windlab Developments Pty is already in the process of developing a 600 MW project, known as the Kennedy Wind Farm Project, in Queensland, Australia.
In the meantime, AGL Energy Ltd., the Australian electricity retailer, and partner Meridian Energy Ltd. of New Zealand agreed last year to build a 420-megawatt project in the state of Victoria.
As for Suzlon, according to its web site it has won more than $1.8 billion (€1.4 billion) in contracts in Australia to supply more than 750 megawatts of clean power, the company’s website shows.
