Suzlon shareholders approve sale of offshore wind subsidiary Senvion

India’s largest wind energy company, Suzlon Energy, will sell off its Germany-based Senvion subsidiary in an effort to reduce the company's overall debt.
Suzlon shareholders approve sale of offshore wind subsidiary Senvion

Suzlon acquired Senvion, an offshore wind energy technology provider, in 2007.

The company has been struggling in recent years due to the rollback of incentives in many countries around the world. Suzlon's worst year was 2012-2013, during which it lost $142 million.

Media reports put the country's debt at slightly south of $2.2 billion.

But things are far from grim for Suzlon, as both the Indian central government and a number of states have vowed to increase the nation's wind capacity.

Also just over the horizon is the anticipated launch of India's National Wind Energy Mission.

Characteristically bullish, Suzlon is expected to install about 5 GW of wind energy capacity within the next decade, including 2 GW on onshore wind and about 500 MW of offshore wind capacity.
