Wind industry celebrates its first GW of installed capacity

For the first time in its history, the South American country has reached the milestone of 1,000 MW of installed wind capacity. The gigawatt mark was reached after the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) authorised the Elebrás Cidreira (70 MW) wind farm in Tramandaí, Rio Grande do Sul, to begin commercial operations.

The Elebrás Cidreira wind farm is the fiftieth in Brazil and forms part of the Incentive Program for Alternative Energy Sources (Proinfa). Boasting 31 turbines, the plant is operated by Elebrás Projetos, belonging to the EDP Group. According to Aneel, Brazil now has 1,006 MW of approved installed capacity, representing 0.87% of the country's total installed capacity of 115 GW.

429 wind energy projects have been registered for the next wind energy capacity auction, amounting to 10.9 GW. The country also has a further 927 MW under construction.
