Wind power in Europe: better than EU's expectations in 2005

6,183 new megawatts of wind energy were connected to the European grids along 2005, a new record for the industry, according to the new figures released by the EWEA. Likewise, Europe's total capacity installed to date reached 40,504 MW, after an 18% increase from the former year. All this capacity would be able to cover a 2.8% of the EU's total energy demand during 2004. “The wind power industry has achieved, five years before it was expected, the goal set by the European Commission for 2010", said Mr Arthoros Zervos, EWEA's President. “In this way, the capacity of this technology is to prove huge amounts of clean energy in a fast and reliable way is proved”, he added.

The growth was achieved despite a slowdown of in the construction of facilities in the German and Spanish markets, even though these countries keep leading the European markets in terms of size".

Last year, Germany was again first as concerns new capacity installed, with 1,808 MW, achieving an amazing 18,428 MW in total. Spain's 1,264 MW, levaing the country second in the rank, make the country's total rach 10,027 MW.

Portugal's figures put the country in the wind world map, with 500 new megawatts, almost half ot its 1,022 MW installed to date. Italy and the UK added 452 MW and 446 MW respectively (1,717 MW and 1,353 MW in total).
