The company has now installed its 80th and final offshore wind turbine in the German North Sea and also completed the construction of Meerwind’s 3,500-tonne offshore converter substation. Work began on the facility in 2012 and has now been completed on schedule within 18 months.
Meerwind will generate enough energy to power approximately 360,000 households helping Germany to eliminate around one million tons of carbon emissions per year. The facility was the first German offshore wind project to be fully financed by private investors. It was also the largest German offshore wind farm to achieve full financial closing under the country’s KfW financing programme. The KfW programme is orientated towards helping Germany meet its renewable energy targets by providing debt financing to greenfield energy projects.
“I would like to thank the project’s investors, staff, suppliers and other stakeholders for their significant commitment and support” said Jens Assheuer, CEO of WindMW. “The completion of the project on schedule and at the highest quality standards is a result of the contributions of all parties involved.”
Investment in the construction of Meerwind has totalled 1.2 billion euros. The facility is located 23 kilometres north of Helgoland.
