The project was executed by IBERDROLA’s engineering and construction subsidiary and consists of 11 Gamesa G80 wind turbines, each with 2 MW unit capacity and standing 78 metres tall. The extension means that the La Ventosa facility can now supply electricity to over 190,000 Mexican households, displacing some 230,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.
The wind farm’s grid connection has also been upgraded along with the 230kV transmission line owned by the Federal Commission for Electricity (CFE). In total, the project has created an average of 250 construction jobs and provides a steady income for over 150 local families and landowners.
La Ventosa wind power complex is located in the municipality of Juchitán de Zaragoza (Oaxaca), on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec which has one of the world’s best wind resources. The facility was first commissioned in 2009 and was IBERDROLA’s first wind farm in Mexico. It was also the first facility to have been built by private initiative in the country and is a UN Clean Development Mechanism project within the framework of the Kyoto Protocol.
IBERDROLA is playing a leading role in the development of renewable energy projects in Mexico, where it currently operates 230MW of wind power capacity. The company also operates the La Venta III (102MW) and Bii Nee Stipa (26MW) wind farms, all of which employ Gamesa technology. The company has become a leading electricity operator in the country where it has maintained a presence since 1998.
