Overcapacity and new low cost entries into market stymied wind turbine prices in 2011 Overcapacity and new low cost entries into market stymied wind turbine prices in 2011
The average price for utility-scale wind equipment hit a new low in the second half of 2011, dipping four percent due to excess capacity and the entry of new low-cost competitors to the sector, according to the latest Wind Turbine Price Index released by Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

Wind energy output reaches record high
Wind energy broke a record in February in Spain with wind turbines achieing their highest-ever electricity output, generating a total of 4.890 GWh. According to provisional figures from Red Eléctrica de España (REE), wind power was the No. 3 source of energy in the month, after coal-fired and nuclear plants.
Can wind farms and forests mix?
Forests were previously no-go areas for wind developers as trees reduced wind speeds and caused unstable wind conditions, making wind farms less efficient. However, Peter Herbert Meier from TÜV SÜD Industrie Service takes a look at how forestry land in Germany is moving into the focus of wind farm planners as modern technologies enable the environmentally and socially sustainable development of new wind farm sites. He examines what aspects planners, investors and operators must consider to ensure an efficient approval process and smooth operation.
